Telling, track by track, the eternal story of a broken love affair and a musician’s epic, desperate response to it, this is a progressive ambient album par excellence. Former acclaimed indie-band axeman Mike Payne is essentially a sonic blues guitarist who now, massively, has expanded his oeuvre into a Fender-shaped electro/FX studio of violently weeping weapons.

Almost entirely instrumental, the work begins by wandering from the first doubts of the tryst into suspended moods of worshipping, urgent bliss, then descending by turns into confusion, yearning, jealousy, escapism, despair and eventually solitude – playing alone to a deserted arena clearly only of his fantasies. So by the end, even his group and audience has left Payne…

After all though, it’s a solo record and vision: Classical in construction, symphonic rock-blues-electro in execution – highly original, deeply creative and intelligently arresting. No wonder Mike Payne is apparently loved by Paris’s maisons des parfumes, with both Guerlain and Mugler having already this year commissioned advertising soundtracks from him. Can’t wait to see what’s next from this enigmatic new maestro.
